Our Approach

Salsa

There are many different styles of Salsa. As dance instructors, we're often asked to describe our approach to Salsa dancing. One theme that we emphasize is dancing with the music. This applies to all of the dances that we teach, but especially to Salsa. If the music suddenly gains energy, our dancing might reflect that in many different ways. If the music builds towards a climax, we might gradually increase the intensity or complexity of our dance moves. Or perhaps one of us will be intrigued with a particular instrument in the music and play off of that for a while. In our beginning Salsa classes we teach "On 1". Once a foundation of Salsa has been established, we like to introduce dancing "On 2" in our Salsa/Mambo 3 class. One reason we teach New York style Salsa ("On 2") is that we love the music that comes from New York. Tito Puente, Wayne Gorbea, and Jimmy Bosch (just to name a few of our favorite musicians) all hail from the Big Apple.

In New York style Salsa, we "break on 2", accenting the syncopation and texture of the music. This style of Salsa, also referred to as Mambo, invites the dancers to express themselves through improvisation and spontaneous styling driven by the music. This is similar to an instrument in the Salsa orchestra feeding off the clave rhythm. New York style Salsa is suggestive of hot, steamy summer nights in the Bronx, blasting Ran Kan Kan, and dancing like there's no tomorrow.
